Tottenham Hotspur scouting Lecce midfielder Morten Hjulmand
Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund are said to be scouting Lecce midfielder Morten Hjulmand, as per Italian outlet CalcioMercatoWeb.
Spurs could use fresh legs in defensive midfield to compete with the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur. The Uruguay international’s season-ended injury earlier this month is evidence that we need more depth in central midfield.
Oliver Skipp and Pape Matar Sarr are players for the future and are yet to showcase anything that makes them regular starters in manager Antonio Conte’s line-up right now.
Hjulmand is the captain of Lecce at the age of 23, which shows his leadership skills and how highly he is rated by manager Marco Baroni. They are currently 13th in the table with 27 points and are well clear of the relegation zone.
A good move?
Hjulmand joined I Lupi from Admira Wacker Modling in the summer of 2021. He has since made 81 appearances across competitions for the Italian club, registering nine assists.
The good news for Spurs and Borussia Dortmund here would be that he doesn’t have long left on his contract at the Stadio Via del mare. He could leave as a free agent in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt).
One can imagine that in such a situation, a team like Lecce, with modest expectations and finances, wouldn’t place an exorbitant price tag on him, especially if he doesn’t renew his deal with them.
It would certainly make way more sense for them to cash in on him and invest in a replacement rather than lose him for nothing. Of course, we can’t predict what they will do and what stance they will take regarding a potential transfer for Hjulmand.

But this is a transfer move that shouldn’t be very difficult for us if we assign our resources properly. Of course, we have to watch out for Dortmund as well as hope that Southampton doesn’t reignite their interest in him after failing with a bid to sign him last month.
