Tottenham Hotspur pull out of race to land Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie
According to InterLive.it, Tottenham Hotspur have pulled out of the race for talented Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen due to the high price demands of the Bundesliga club.
It is no secret that Tottenham have been in the market for a new centre-back. The team’s defensive struggles this season have been well-documented, and many believe that a quality centre-back could help solve some of the team’s problems.
In January, Tottenham made a bid for Hincapie, offering €25m (£21.9m) for the young defender. However, the bid was rejected, and Hincapie remained at Leverkusen. It looks like he will not be an option for Spurs going forward.
Since then, Hincapie has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2027. It seems that Tottenham have decided that the fee that the German club are demanding is high for a relatively unproven defender.
Spurs and Liverpool have now pulled out of the negotiations for the Ecuadorian while Inter Milan no longer consider him a realistic target. The only club that seems willing to meet Leverkusen’s asking price is Newcastle United.
Many Tottenham fans are likely to be disappointed by this news. Hincapie has the potential to be a top-class defender and Tottenham could have been more aggressive in their pursuit of him.
Tottenham’s decision to not go in for Hincapie is giving a mixed feeling. On one hand, he is an exceptional centre-back with lots of potential but on the other hand – there could be cheaper options in the market.

Regardless of whether or not Tottenham made the right decision, it is clear that the team is in need of defensive reinforcements. The team’s defensive record this season has been poor, and it is clear that changes need to be made if the team is to compete at the highest level.
Let’s see if Fabio Paratici & co. have other options lined up to reinforce the position. They must be having a plan. Only time will tell.
