Tottenham Hotspur battle Arsenal and Manchester United for Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio
Tottenham Hotspur could have to battle Arsenal and Manchester United if they want to sign Real Madrid attacker Marco Asensio, as per Football Insider (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The 27-year-old is set to be available on a free transfer this summer. His contract expires at the end of the season and he is yet to pen fresh terms with Los Blancos.
Spurs, along with Arsenal and Manchester United, are apparently in talks with intermediaries over signing the Real Madrid star. This could be a very smart acquisition for whichever team that ends up signing him.
He is in the prime years of his career and has a lot of experience playing for one of the best clubs in the world. Asensio can play as a winger, a false nine, as well as in the No. 10 position.
What next for Asensio?
Spurs currently have Dejan Kulusevski, Richarlison, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min in attack. Arnaut Danjuma is expected to return to Villarreal this summer from his loan spell here but Bryan Gil would be his natural replacement.
Hence, it’s hard to see where Asensio will fit in for us in attack unless one of our main men up front leaves. However, it could be a smart move to play him as a No. 10 in midfield.
Arsenal, by comparison, could offer him a better shot at first-team football. They lack quality competition for Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka. Although Leandro Trossard was signed in January to do just that.
Still, manager Mikel Arteta doesn’t have another attacking midfielder to compete with Martin Odegaard while Asensio can also fill in for Gabriel Jesus at No. 9. Asensio would be a brilliant coup for us but the Gunners could offer real competition for his signature.

Moreover, the player should also want to come to N17 in the first place. If he doesn’t get regular playing time here, it would make no sense for him to leave Real Madrid for us.
