Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid among teams after €50m Spanish defender

Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres in the summer.

Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal battle Real Madrid for Villarreal star Pau Torres

Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Real Madrid are among a star-studded six-club list chasing the signature of highly-rated Villarreal star Pau Torres, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.

The Spain international could be available for a fee of 50million Euros. The amount may seem steep considering that he has only 16 months left on his contract at the Estadio de la Ceramica (Transfermarkt).

Real Madrid being involved in any transfer race spells bad news for the other clubs. Los Blancos boast a trophy-laden history and are one of the most prestigious teams in world football.

Moreover, they offer Torres the chance to stay in Spain and continue playing football at the highest level and in the most prestigious competitions. This is why Spurs have to make sure they are ready with the financial incentives if it does come down to them and Los Merengues.

What next for Spurs and Torres?

Newcastle United, Arsenal, Juventus, and Aston Villa have also been linked with a move for the 26-year-old centre-back. Among the Premier League teams, Arsenal and Tottenham could offer him a shot at playing European football.

So can Newcastle United if they keep up their form. We have an urgent need for a centre-back, especially one who can play as a left-sided centre-half.

Ben Davies has been playing out of position in that area for far too long. Eric Dier and Cristian Romero could use another specialist centre-back to aid them in defence.

Being a left-footed centre-back, Torres would give manager Antonio Conte the chance to play him down the left-hand side of a backthree. It, however, remains to be seen if Spurs are willing to spend so much for a player who could become a free agent next year.
