Fabrizio Romano gives his verdict on Tottenham Hotspur’s links to Mainz midfielder Anton Stach
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has shot down rumours linking Tottenham Hotspur with FC Mainz 05 midfielder Anton Stach.
Writing in his exclusive CaughtOffside column, Romano claimed:
“Anton Stach is impressing with Mainz and we’re now seeing transfer rumours about a potential big move to the Premier League.
“He’s a good player with value close to €18-20m, but at the moment honestly I’m not aware of his name being on Tottenham’s list. No decision will be made by Tottenham on summer targets in February or March.”
For 18 to 20million Euros, Stach won’t be a bad signing by any means. But if Romano claims that we aren’t linked to him, then perhaps there isn’t a solid chance that we will sign him in the summer window.
Stach to Spurs?
A bit about Stach. He is a 24-year-old defensive midfielder who has been at FSV Mainz 05 since the summer of 2021 when he joined them from Greuther Furth.
As per WhoScored, he specialises in aerial duels and ball interceptions and is a tidy passer of the ball. It wouldn’t be unfair if we draw comparisons with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The two-cap Germany international’s contract situation could also be in his suitors’ favour as he could become a free agent in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt).
He would be pretty good if we want to add depth in the defensive midfield area. Oliver Skipp, 22, has been good but he is still getting to grips with Premier League football.
The Englishman could use perhaps another season before we start thinking of him as real competition for Rodrigo Bentancur and Hojbjerg. If not Stach, then Spurs would be smart to instead go after a midfielder who specialises in the attacking side of things.

That is a profile we are currently lacking here – a midfielder who can play behind the striker and create chances by the bucketload for his teammates.
