Tottenham Hotspur are most interested in signing Napoli star Alex Meret

Tottenham Hotspur are most interested in signing Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret, as per RAI journalist Ciro Venerato on radio show 1 Football Club (h/t CalcioNapoli24).

Spurs are surely going to be in the market for a new goalkeeper considering Hugo Lloris’ age. The 36-year-old cannot keep playing forever and has been pretty error-prone in recent seasons.

It’s time to replace him. Meret, in that regard, could be an option. He travelled with the Italy squad that won the UEFA Euros 2020 in England and has become Napoli’s No. 1 goalkeeper since David Ospina left Gli Azzurri.

The three-cap Italy international has played 32 games across competitions this season. At 25, he is in his prime years and can only get better with further training and experience.

A smart option for Spurs?

It remains to be seen which other clubs are interested in Meret. It won’t be a surprise if there are other teams given his age profile and ability.

Spurs would certainly be looking at many names. Finding a player who can replicate Lloris’ longevity and quality won’t be easy and may well be an expensive procedure.

It’s important that we take our time but are decisive and don’t leave things too late. Meret would be a good option and his contract situation would certainly suit us.

He can enter the final year of his contract at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona if he doesn’t pen a fresh deal at the club. According to Venerato, Napoli want to keep him and want to extend his deal.

Not a surprise. Spurs just have to wish that no deal between the two parties is reached until the summer and then pounce the moment they believe they can sign the player.
