Report: Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid don’t want Sergio Reguilon next season

Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid both don’t want Sergio Reguilon for next season, as per Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo.

The Spanish left-back was allowed to join Los Colchoneros on a season-long loan last summer. However, fitness issues and inconsistency have seen him play just 98 minutes across competitions for his new team this season.

Spurs signed Ivan Perisic on a free transfer from Inter Milan last summer. Ryan Sessegnon has also been offered a more prominent role under manager Antonio Conte, while we have also seen Ben Davies return to playing down that flank recently.

We are well stacked in that position for the time being but we must ask ourselves if letting Reguilon, 26, leave right now would be a smart move. He is a balanced full-back who can attack and defend pretty well.

Spurs would be foolish to offload Reguilon

Sessegnon, having been a winger in the past at Fulham, is an attacking full-back and can be found out in defence. Davies, meanwhile, lacks that finesse going forward even though he has a very sweet left foot.

Perisic, 34, is slowly edging towards retirement. The end of his career could be neigh and we can’t count on him as a long-term option.

It would make sense to keep Reguilon here, who has already played 67 times for us across competitions and knows a bit about the club and how they play. It is surprising that Spurs haven’t shown more faith in the former Real Madrid and Sevilla full-back.

Unless an attractive offer doesn’t arrive on the table, that sees us either break even or profit on the £32million fee with add-ons we agreed to pay for his services in the summer of 2020.
