Pundit says Harry Kane will stay if Tottenham Hotspur sign James Ward-Prowse from Southampton

Tottenham Hotspur have been urged to sign Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse by former Newcastle United and Crystal Palace midfielder Darren Ambrose.

He told TalkSPORT:

“I’d take him at Spurs for £50m. I think he’s the perfect player that Spurs need that goes from defence to attack. And he can be that link to the play and I think you’ve got the players that will do the dirty work – the dog work – in terms of [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg and [Oliver] Skipp and players like that.

“I think he’s fantastic. Listen, you sign James Ward-Prowse, Harry Kane stays. That’s an extra ten goals a season for him with his deliveries.”

Someone would have to offer him for 50million Pounds for Ambrose to consider buying him at Spurs for that amount. It would be a shock if a struggling Saints side decide to part ways with a club legend such as Ward-Prowse.

Good move if Saints are relegated

He is one of Europe’s finest set-piece takers. Those who have seen him whip in free kicks and corner kicks week in, week out with almost unerring accuracy would agree with that claim.

Kane’s future at Spurs is another saga in itself. The England international is yet to renew his contract in N17 and could leave as a free agent in the summer of 2024 if he doesn’t pen fresh terms (Transfermarkt).

It seems naive to say that Kane would stay automatically if Ward-Prowse arrives. If anything, one can count on the Southampton midfielder to take away free kicks and penalties from Kane’s grasp – if he joins us and Kane allows that to happen.

If Kane continues to be on set pieces, that is one of Ward-Prowse’s strongest suits wasted. The 28-year-old Saints captain would, of course, be a massive source of deliveries into the box for Kane and our other attackers.

But we are better off adding a truly attacking midfielder who specialises in taking on defenders and creating chances for his teammates from open play. Ward-Prowse can do that as well but a move would make more sense and seem more realistic if Southampton are relegated this campaign.

If not, it would seem hard to prise him away from St. Mary’s given his current deal runs until the summer of 2026 (Transfermarkt).
