Barcelona will compete with Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Manuel Ugarte

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in the race to sign Manuel Ugarte, the 21-year-old South American midfielder who has caught the eye of several top European clubs.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Barcelona are also interested in Ugarte as a potential alternative to Martin Zubimendi, Xavi’s top target for midfield reinforcements and could rival the London club for the player.

Ugarte has been in great form since arriving in Europe and has been a pivotal figure for Sporting CP this season. The Uruguayan international’s progress has not gone unnoticed, and Tottenham Hotspur are also said to be keen on acquiring his services in the upcoming transfer window.

The interest from Tottenham might come as a surprise to some, given the plethora of defensive midfield options at our disposal. What we actually need is a creative midfielder of high quality.

Tottenham already has several defensive midfield options in the form of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Oliver Skipp. However, Ugarte’s arrival could add an extra dimension to the team’s midfield, giving Conte more options going forward.

Ugarte’s signing would be in line with Tottenham’s recent approach to recruitment, with the club opting to target young, talented players with the potential for significant growth. The Uruguayan international fits this mould perfectly and could be an excellent long-term investment for the club.

However, Tottenham will face stiff competition from Barcelona in the race to sign Ugarte. The Catalan giants are looking for a long-term replacement for Sergio Busquets, who is now well into his thirties and no longer consistent.

Ugarte’s potential as a replacement for Busquets has not gone unnoticed, and Barcelona has been monitoring his progress closely. Despite Barcelona’s interest, Tottenham should not be deterred in their pursuit of the young midfielder.

The lure of first-team football could be a significant factor in convincing Ugarte to choose Spurs over Barcelona, who have a wealth of midfield options at their disposal. Let’s see if we can manage to convince him.
