Antonio Conte says Tottenham Hotspur have taken a step forward despite Champions League exit vs AC Milan

Tottenham Hotspur may have been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by AC Milan, but manager Antonio Conte is determined to find the silver lining in their performance.

In his post-match press conference, the Italian pointed out that his team had shown improvement compared to last season’s efforts in Europe. He said this is a positive that they can take going forward.

It’s true that Tottenham struggled to make an impact against AC Milan, particularly after defender Cristian Romero was sent off in the second half. The visitors could have easily scored more goals if they had been more clinical in front of goal. But despite the disappointment of the result, Conte refused to dwell on the negatives.

Instead, he highlighted the fact that Tottenham had managed to reach the last-16 stage of the Champions League, which was an improvement on their performance in the Europa Conference League last season. It’s worth remembering that this was a brand new competition last year, and Spurs were unable to progress beyond the group stage.

Conte also made it clear that he was not satisfied with Tottenham’s attacking play in the Milan game. The team has now gone three matches without scoring, which is a cause for concern and something they need to correct.

Speaking about the game as quoted by the Express, here is what Conte had to say and he tried to see the positive amongst many negatives.

“We played in the Europa Conference League last season and weren’t able to overcome the group stage. We lost against Mura, Vitesse, Pacos de Ferreira last season. Now we took a step forward but I think it is not enough and if we want to be competitive, we have to fight.”

It’s clear that Antonio Conte is not satisfied with Tottenham’s performance in the Champions League this season. But he is also aware that progress is being made, and that there are positives to take from their campaign.

Tottenham have made progress under Antonio Conte without a doubt but for every two steps they have taken forward, there has been one step that they have taken back and this has been a vicious cycle.
