Tottenham boss Antonio Conte gives verdict on Harry Kane’s first penalty since World Cup miss
Harry Kane scored Tottenham Hotspur’s second goal of the game against Nottingham Forest in his team’s 3-1 Premier League win on Saturday.
He opened the scoring via a neat header and had the chance to double his tally in the first half after Richarlison won a penalty. This was Kane’s first spot-kick since he missed a crucial penalty in the closing stages of his team’s 2022 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.
That time, he missed pretty badly – a sight not many would have believed considering how accurate he is with his strikes and how cool he remains under pressure. Moreover, he had slotted home a spot kick against Hugo Lloris in that very same game. Such moments can define a player’s career.
Not Kane. Those who have followed his career would know how resilient he is. Be it missed spot-kicks, lost finals, or goalless runs, the England international comes out of it no matter what.
Kane reaches 20 Premier League goals
That’s exactly what he did against Forest. The 29-year-old scored a convincing kick past goalkeeper Keylor Navas, who, by the way, is no slouch between the sticks.
After the game, manager Antonio Conte was asked if he ever doubted Kane’s ability on spot-kicks after his miss for England in Qatar. The former Chelsea and Juventus boss replied (h/t Football.London):
“No, never but he can kick the penalty also if he is blind [makes the gesture of being blindfolded]. We are talking about a player who is a world class striker and is really important but for me it is really difficult to think and to answer this question.”
The goal took Harry Kane to 20 Premier League goals for the sixth season running. What a player. We can only hope he stays here beyond the summer and continues to plunder in goals.
