Tottenham Hotspur increasingly interested in Emiliano Martinez
According to Tyc Sports (h/t The Express), Tottenham Hotspur could make a push to land Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez in the coming weeks ahead of the 2023 summer transfer window.
The Argentine international was a key member of the South American nation’s World Cup winning squad from Qatar last year. Martinez impressed in the penalty shootout after denying Randal Kolo-Muanu a last-gasp winner in the dying seconds of extra time.
A consistent performer for Aston Villa, Martinez is an excellent shot-stopper who is also an intimidating presence at the back. His antics often draw criticism from detractors but few can argue that they are more often than not effective.
Hugo Lloris has been a rock at the back for Tottenham for over a decade. The French superstar is now 36 years old and is starting to show his age in decision-making and performance.
Fraser Forster has also stepped up when needed but at 34 himself, he is hardly an option that can be deemed long-term. It is imperative that Tottenham will need to bring in a new number-one next summer and interest in Martinez is on the rise.
Fabio Paratici is expected to put in a concrete proposal for the 30-year-old soon. In many ways, it is rather curious that Tottenham might end up replacing one World Cup winning goalkeeper with another. At the very least, it should make for some good headlines.
Martinez is used to life in north London having spent a decade at arch-rivals Arsenal. However, he largely spent time out on loan and only made a handful of appearances for the Gunners.
The Argentine ace has also been vocal about his disdain for the lack of opportunities at The Emirates. If anything, it should endear him to the Tottenham faithful even more.
Martinez is not the only goalkeeper on Tottenham’s list. The North Londoners are also keeping tabs on Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, Everton star Jordan Pickford and Inter Milan’s Andre Onana.
