Tottenham Hotspur told to instantly fire Antonio Conte if they want top-four this season
Former Chelsea left-back and TalkSPORT pundit Scott Minto has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur need to fire Antonio Conte instantly if they want a top-four finish this campaign.
The Italian manager’s contract expires at the end of the season and there are growing concerns that he won’t renew his deal in N17. Conte will end the season trophyless.
We are not in the Premier League title race, have been ousted from both domestic cups and were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League by AC Milan (1-0 aggregate) in the last-16 stage.
According to Minto, in his exclusive comments for TalkSPORT, Conte is a ‘dead man walking’ and Spurs are better off firing him now if they want a top-four finish this season. Spurs sit fourth with 48 points from 27 games – six more than Liverpool, who have a game in hand.
Is Minto right?
“…you look forward and it’s about finishing fourth. We know Antonio Conte is a dead man walking in that sense. He’s not gonna be there next season so what’s the point of having him now. Tottenham need to concentrate on finishing fourth. What’s the best chance of finishing fourth… is it with Conte or without? I’d suggest without.”
The 3-1 win against Nottingham Forest showed that Spurs are still well in the mix to finish in the top four. While we shouldn’t have settled for just a top-four finish at the start of the season as a marker of success, it is the best possible outcome for us now that is realistic.
Minto’s point is a bit blunt but it may have some sense to it. Hiring a manager right now, if it is clear in the backroom that Conte isn’t going to continue next season, could give him the time to settle in and know the team before the summer window arrives.
The former Inter Milan and Juventus boss has claimed that he will decide his future at the end of the season. But can we take that risk? If he continues, then it better be on a long-term deal.

If not, we can be left high and dry in search of a new manager just before the start of a fresh campaign. With each passing week, it seems more unlikely that Conte will walk. If Daniel Levy is shrewd, which he is, then he should have a contingency plan in place already.
