Tottenham Hotspur urged to appoint Burnley manager Vincent Kompany if Antonio Conte leaves
Former Chelsea ace Tony Cascarino has suggested Tottenham Hotspur appoint Vincent Kompany in the dugout if Antonio Conte were to leave the club.
At the moment, the Belgian is the head coach of Championship outfit Burnley. Currently, the Clarets are flying high in the second tier of English football. They are at the top of the table and are on course to be promoted to the Premier League.
Speaking on talkSPORT (h/t Express), Cascarino, who also was at Aston Villa during his playing career, has been impressed by the former Manchester City defender at the Turf Moor side.
“Now there’s an opportunity out there that is going to be jumped on by somebody very quickly. And I think if they do lose Conte, which pretty much looks like is going to happen in the summer, there’s one person that stands out for me – Vincent Kompany.”
Kompany is a well-known name in the English top flight. As a player, the Belgian captained the Sky Blues to several domestic trophies. He is one of Manchester City’s greatest-ever players, having won four league titles and representing them in 360 games across competitions.
When the 36-year-old ended his successful stint at City, he returned to his boyhood club Anderlecht as a player-manager in the summer of 2019. Subsequently, the defender stepped down from his role as the head coach for some time after a poor start to the Purple & White’s season.
Then, after retiring in the summer of 2020, Komapany became Anderlecht’s permanent manager. After a decent spell in Belgium, the ex-defender made his way back to England before the start of the current campaign in the Burnley dugout.
The former City star has thrived taking the reins at the Lancashire-based club. After 36 games, they are 13 points ahead of the nearest team in the chasing pack in the Championship. The Clarets have scored the most number of goals and have the best defensive record in the league.
Conte has found life difficult since being appointed Tottenham manager last season. After a rather fruitful end to the previous campaign, the Italian has struggled to build on it.

Spurs’ wait for a trophy has extended after our elimination from the cup competitions and the Champions League. While Kompany has shown a lot of promise, he is yet to manage in the PL. Therefore, for now, it would be wise to go after a more experienced head coach in case Conte leaves.
