Tottenham boss Antonio Conte takes dig at Pep Guardiola with Julia Roberts claim
Speaking in an interview as quoted by Football. London, Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has taken a dig at his Manchester City compatriot Pep Guardiola with a ‘Julia Roberts claim’.
To understand what Conte meant, we will have to go back to Guardiola’s comments on what one of his biggest regrets as a Manchester City manager was a few days ago when he explained a story on Julia Roberts.
Pep said that he was disappointed that Roberts, who he considers an idol of his visited Manchester a few years ago but decided to go to United rather than City despite his team being better during that time.
It was a rather funny take on a much more serious question from Pep that has garnered a lot of attention. Man United took a dig posting pictures of when Roberts came to Old Trafford and Conte has now had his say on the matter.
Speaking about his failures, Conte claimed that at least he did not have the regret of not being able to meet Julia Roberts.
“When I was at Chelsea, Julia Roberts came to see us play and I had the chance to introduce her in our dressing room! But it’s normal for big coaches at important clubs to try to win every competition, and we know very well for Pep – one of the most important coaches in the world – the importance of winning the Champions League after seven years with Manchester City”
Running out of time?
All jokes apart, there is absolutely no doubting the legacy that Pep Guardiola has built at Manchester City during his time at the club. He has made them a scary team to face, although they never seem to win or score at the Hotspur Way.
Antonio Conte is nowhere close to achieving such a status with Tottenham. The Italian manager’s future at the club is far from certain and it will be a huge surprise to see him stay at the club beyond this campaign.
Yes, there is a chance that the Italian decides to commit to one more season and Tottenham also choose to keep him but Conte needs to show a lot of improvement in the few games left in this campaign for that to happen.
The priority has to be for Tottenham to finish in the top four in the Premier League. It is ideally not where we want to be but qualifying for the Champions League will at least be a saving grace.
Two serial winning managers back to back in the form of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte have failed to win a trophy with the club. Since leaving Tottenham, Mourinho has gone on to win a trophy with Roma.
