Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur told to ‘act like a big club’ and spend £30m on Illan Meslier
Former West Ham United player Frank McAvennie has told Tottenham Hotspur that they must act like a big club and spend the money to sign Leeds United’s Illan Meslier.
According to Football Insider (h/t Sun), Meslier has been rated at around £30million, with Manchester United, Newcastle United and Chelsea also interested.
According to McAvennie, such a figure shouldn’t be bothering Spurs if they really consider themselves to be a top club. He told Football Insider:
“They are acting like a big club but they are doing everything except spend money like a big club. That is down to Daniel Levy. I do not for one minute believe that they do not have any money, so go and spend it. It is not even his money. Daniel Levy does not own Tottenham, I believe it is Joe Lewis’ money.
“If you own a club you want to get the best players and you are not going to get them at cut rates. Spurs have got to do that, they have never ever done it. Spending £30m on a goalkeeper, it is nothing. The big clubs will spend £80-£100m on a goalkeeper. In today’s world it has to be done.”
He makes sense here. We can all remember how long the Pedro Porro saga lasted in January and in the end, we agreed on a deal where we didn’t have to pay the fee in the winter.
Thankfully, we didn’t miss out on the Spain international because of our bargaining tactics. We cannot let such things happen too often. Meslier is touted by many to be one of the finest goalkeepers in his age bracket.
He could even be the successor to Hugo Lloris in the France squad after the latter’s retirement. Teams will circle him and we cannot afford to drag talks and risk missing out on the Leeds star for a couple of millions.

Lloris is 36 and is becoming error-prone. We have to replace him as soon as possible and there would hardly be better goalkeepers than Meslier to fill the role. It could be an even easier task to land him if Leeds were to be relegated this season. They are currently just two points above the relegation zone.
