Tottenham Hotspur handed a setback in their pursuit of Julian Nagelsmann
According to the Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of landing Julian Nagelsmann as their new manager next summer has hit an early stumbling block with the German keen to take a hiatus following his sack from Bayern Munich.
The 35-year-old is among the best young managers in world football today and is a proponent of attacking football at both TSG Hoffenheim and Bayern Munich. While his stint with the latter might have come to an acrimonious end, it does little to take away from the fact that he belongs in the big time.
His brand of high-octane football coupled with his age makes him an ideal candidate for Tottenham in the long term. However, landing Nagelsmann will prove to be tricky.
The 35-year-old is in no hurry to make his next move and appears likely to wait until the summer to assess his choices. Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain could both be in the market for a manager at the end of the season and are admittedly bigger draws than Tottenham.
Spurs’ interest in Nagelsmann is not new with the club having pursued him back in 2021. The German refused to take over from Jose Mourinho and the club ultimately settled for Nuno Espirito Santo the following summer.
Daniel Levy will now face the unenviable task of finding his 12th manager in the last 22 years. Tottenham have huge ambitions of challenging clubs like Chelsea. Ironically it appears to be taking place in the boardroom rather than on the field.
Landing Nagelsmann will undoubtedly be a coup and give Tottenham someone with the vision and hunger to succeed. However, he is unlikely to be a one-stop solution to all and is likely to follow in his predecessor’s shoes unless the culture of the club enjoys a revamp.
The German is not the only manager on Tottenham’s wish list. Former Spurs favourite Mauricio Pochettino continues to be linked with a return while Thomas Tuchel is already on his way to Bayern.
Zinedine Zidane has also made the shortlist but landing the Frenchman is largely fanciful rather than practical. For now, we are stuck with Cristian Stellini until the end of the season.

Tottenham have rejected reports that they have already reached out to Nagelsmann’s entourage or that the German is their preferred candidate. While the club are unlikely to give away their plans, not having a readymade replacement lined up showcases the inefficiency of the decision-makers in charge.
