Spurs Transfer News: Tottenham among several admirers for Juventus’ Wojciech Szczesny

Tottenham Hotspur are among ‘several admirers’ of Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, as per Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Poland international was on Arsenal’s books for 11 years before leaving the club in the summer of 2017 to join the Old Lady. He has since been a regular starter for them.

He earned a reputation of being an error-prone goalkeeper while at Arsenal – if not that, then a reputation of a player not good enough to be a regular starter for a big six team. But at Juve, he has had a solid time.

The 32-year-old is one of their most trusted and dependable players in recent seasons. His contract expires in the summer of 2024 and that could mean a cut-price deal for the player.

No need

That, and the fact that he is in his 30s. Goalkeepers tend to have longer careers at the top but if we really want to replace Hugo Lloris, 36, for a long time, then we need to target someone younger (Mike Maignan from AC Milan, anyone?)

Sure, he can come cheap. But that is not what we should be going for. Right now, there are a lot of loose screws to be tightened at the club with Antonio Conte gone and Fabio Paratici receiving a lengthy ban from FIFA from football activities across the world.

At a time like this, it’s easy to make things like finding a new goalkeeper take a backseat and settle for just about the easiest, most convenient option on the market. We cannot afford to do that when finding a replacement for a two-time FIFA World Cup finalist.

This a situation where offering Lloris an extension until the summer of 2024 doesn’t seem like the worst of ideas. Just in case we are too occupied to properly pursue and purchase a big-name, world-class goalkeeper, we can stick with him for another season and try again next year.
