Richarlison and Cristian Romero threatened to leave if Antonio Conte stayed at Tottenham
Tottenham Hotspur’s decision to part ways with Antonio Conte has reportedly saved the club from losing two of their key players – Cristian Romero and Richarlison.
According to Argentine journalist Gaston Edul as quoted by Metro, both players were contemplating leaving the North London side if the Italian manager had stayed. Romero in particular leaving would have been a catastrophe.
It is no secret that there was a brewing conflict between Conte and the Spurs team. The former Inter Milan boss openly criticised his players after their 3-3 draw with Southampton, labelling them “selfish” and saying they didn’t want to “perform under pressure.”
The friction might also be seen in Richarlison’s public criticism of the 53-year-old when AC Milan eliminated Spurs from the Champions League. Conte did hit back at the Brazilian though.
In an interview with TyC Sports, Edul, who is friendly with numerous members of the Argentine national team, claimed,
“Conte and the team did not get along well. We were able to discern it from his statements. In the event that he remained, a few players had issued an ultimatum. Tottenham’s future prospects have now shifted.”
The news of Romero and Richarlison considering leaving Tottenham due to Conte’s management style is a worrying sign for the club. Both players have been crucial to Spurs’ success this season, and losing them would have been a significant blow. However, the fact that they have decided to stay is a positive development for the team.
With Conte now gone, Tottenham can look forward to a fresh start under a new manager. The club’s hierarchy will be hoping to appoint someone who can unite the squad and bring back the winning mentality that has been missing in recent seasons.
All players are likely to be handed a clean sheet going forward under a new manager. While Romero really does not need it, one player who will desperately need a new start is Brazilian star Richarlison.
