Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona are in talks for permanent Clement Lenglet transfer
Tottenham Hotspur wanted a centre-back last summer and they ended up with Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan deal without an option to buy.
The Barcelona loanee arrived at Spurs after being cast out of the first-team picture with the Catalan giants. Not a lot to look forward to, there. But he has been pretty decent for us whenever he has been handed the chance to play.
He arrived without an option to buy him permanently at the end of the campaign. Nor did it contain an obligation to purchase, as it did with Cristian Romero or Pedro Porro, which gives such deals the guise of a permanent deal from the get-go.
In such cases, fans find it hard to get attached to a player knowing he will return to his parent club at the end of the season. But there’s good news for those who have taken a liking to the Frenchman.
Spurs must get Lenglet
According to Spanish outlet SPORT, Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be in talks for a permanent 14million Euros transfer for the French centre-back. For that price? We shouldn’t even be thinking twice.
In the games he has played here, Lenglet has shown that he can hack it in the Premier League. He hasn’t been world class but he can do a job if and when required, especially as a third or fourth-choice centre-back.
He is also 27, which means he has a lot of football still left to play in his career. This deal makes sense from all angles, with Barca also not keen to keep him on board at Spotify Camp Nou.
On paper, it wouldn’t please some fans that we are taking a player Barca don’t deem worthy of keeping at the club. But should we really care about such things when we are getting a quality player like Lenglet? If anything, we should be glad they supposedly don’t want him, so that we don’t have to pay a lot to sign him permanently.

This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t target a world-class centre-back in the summer. We absolutely must. But Lenglet is also a necessary signing who will add important depth at the back for whichever manager that takes over the managerial helm this summer.
