Tottenham Hotspur confirm Fabio Paratici decision after FIFA ruling that extended his FIGC ban

Tottenham Hotspur’s season was handed another setback earlier this week when it was announced that sporting director Fabio Paratici’s ban was extended worldwide.

Paratici was handed a two-and-a-half-year ban in January after Juventus, where he worked for 11 years before joining Spurs, were found guilty of false accounting. This ban initially only applied in Italy.

The Italian FA (FIGC) ban was extended earlier this week to ban the Italian chief from footballing activities. In light of this, Spurs have confirmed via their official website (h/t the Guardian) that Paratici has taken an immediate leave of absence under further notice.

His future in N17 will become clear after the hearing on April 19 in Italy. An excerpt from the club statement read:

“Given Fifa’s unexpected ruling the sanctions may now have multi-jurisdictional effect, although they are still related to the FIGC appeal. In view of Fifa’s decision, Fabio has agreed with the club that he will take an immediate leave of absence pending the outcome of his appeal.”

This was coming. From the moment it was revealed that Paratici’s ban was extended by FIFA to include worldwide footballing activities, it was a huge possibility that the Italian and Spurs will, albeit temporarily, try to sever ties in some ways.

It’s a big allegation against him and hopefully, he is cleared of any wrongdoing later this month. Paratici has been crucial to our transfer dealings ever since Daniel Levy has appointed him.

He would surely have been involved in our search for a new manager after Antonio Conte’s departure in March by mutual consent. All of that could be put on hold until Paratici’s hearing and if the appeal works in his favour.

One can understand that Spurs would be frustrated by these developments but the club seems to have been unprepared for such a situation. Surely they could have looked at all possibilities and come up with contingency plans in January itself.
