Arsenal legend urges Tottenham Hotspur to let Harry Kane help choose next manager
Paul Merson has urged Tottenham Hotspur to let Harry Kane have a say in appointing the next manager as it could help him stay at the club.
The England international’s contract at Spurs expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt) and he has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich and Manchester United. He is yet to renew his deal in N17, which could be seen as a sign that he is having second thoughts about staying with us.
According to Merson, who spent nearly 15 years on Arsenal’s books as an attacking midfielder and a forward until 1997, Spurs’ main draw is Kane. If the Englishman isn’t at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, then no top manager would want to come to the club. He told Sky Sports Soccer Saturday (h/t the Express):
“You’re going to Harry Kane and asking Harry Kane, surely? As soon as Harry Kane goes, that is it! Who wants to be the manager of Tottenham Hotspur if Harry Kane isn’t there?
Some players reach a stage where they have an undisputed label of being a club legend. Most of them are endowed with that honour at the dusk of their playing days or after they leave the club.
Kane, meanwhile, is a history-making legend for the Lilywhites at the age of 29. He is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer and broke Wayne Rooney’s 53-goal record to become England’s most prolific player ever.
He has earned the right to be consulted if we are selecting a new boss. Antonio Conte’s exit in March has left us searching for one, with Mauricio Pochettino and Julian Nagelsmann two names linked with us.

Of course, the majority of the say in such a decision should lie with the board and the higher-ups at the club. But keeping Kane at Spurs is as important, if not more, than appointing the right manager.
