Wayne Rooney compares Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford to Tottenham superstar

Wayne Rooney has drawn comparisons between Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Manchester United star Marcus Rashford.

The former Manchester United, Everton and Derby County superstar has analysed the way in which the English duo finish off their chances. According to Rooney, their technique of hitting the ball with power is similar.

He wrote in his column for the Times (Subscription Required):

“He reminds me of Harry Kane in how he puts the ball in the net. You almost never see Harry score a goal where he caresses it into the corner — every finish is hit hard and goes in with pace. Marcus is quite similar. When he gets in front of goal he puts his foot through it.

He added:

“What he and Harry do is actually a much harder skill than, say, stroking it home like Thierry Henry used to do. It’s harder because just like when you hit a golf shot and the harder you swing the less accurate you tend to be, you risk things going wrong. However when you develop the ability to get those finishes on target repeatedly, you become very hard to stop — like Harry throughout his career and Marcus recently.”

These are three of the very best forwards England have produced in the 21st century. Harry Kane is Tottenham Hotspur’s all-time leading goal-scorer and recently overtook Wayne Rooney’s tally of 53 goals for the England national team.

Rashford, meanwhile, has scored 120 goals for the Red Devils in just under 350 career games for them. He is 12th in the all-time Man United top-scorers list and is the only active player in the top 13.

Rooney, of course, is the Red Devils’ all-time leading goal-scorer with 253 strikes to his name. He knows a thing or two about finishing and his assessment of Rashford’s finish is pretty accurate.

Of course, Kane does it more regularly and in a more consistent manner. The 29-year-old is one of the very best number 9s of this generation and has been a goal machine pretty much every season he has played with the senior team.

Rashford’s glory is relatively newfound. He has been wildly inconsistent in terms of tangible contributions but has netted 27 goals and nine assists in 45 games across competitions this season. If he learns how to finish as well as Kane on a more regular basis, there is nothing stopping the 25-year-old from conquering the football world.

One can argue that Kane’s recently-acquired playmaking skills and his ability in the air are better than Rashford’s, but the two players are more or less very complete in terms of their skillset as No. 9s. They already play together for England… hopefully, they don’t play together for Manchester United.
