Sampdoria rule out a permanent move for Tottenham Hotspur loanee Harry Winks

According to the Sun, Serie A club Sampdoria have ruled out a permanent move for Tottenham Hotspur loanee Harry Winks due to the club’s financial difficulties.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Harry Winks will once again find himself in search of a new club. It’s an all too familiar situation that the English midfielder has seen before in his career.

Winks joined Sampdoria in search of more game time, having fallen down the pecking order at Tottenham under former manager Antonio Conte. After a slow start to the season, in part due to an ankle injury, Winks has become a regular in the Sampdoria side since his return in January.

Despite his consistent performances, there was no obligation for Sampdoria to buy Winks at the end of his loan spell. Even if they had wanted to make the move permanent, their financial struggles would have made it impossible.

It’s a shame for Winks, who may have hoped to establish himself in the Serie A and earn a long-term contract. However, he will return to Tottenham in the summer with a year still to run on his current deal.

The question now is whether Winks will have a future at Tottenham under a new manager. The club’s decision to loan him out suggests that he was not part of Conte’s plans, but his performances at Sampdoria may have caught the eye of other suitors.

It’s also worth noting that Tottenham’s midfield is already well-stocked, with the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma and Oliver Skipp all vying for a starting spot. Winks may struggle to break into the side even if he does stay at the club.

That being said, Winks has shown himself to be a reliable and versatile midfielder during his time at Tottenham. He may not be the most flashy or eye-catching player, but he is capable of keeping possession ticking over and linking play between defence and attack.

For Tottenham, the decision on Winks’ future will likely depend on the plans of the new manager. If they see him as part of their long-term vision for the club, they may choose to keep him and give him a chance to prove himself. If not, they could cash in and reinvest the funds in other areas of the squad. Right now, the latter looks likely.
