Tottenham Hotspur ‘unlikely’ to hire former Chelsea manager Graham Potter due to nature of sacking
Tottenham Hotspur are supposedly unlikely to make a move for Graham Potter due to the nature of his sacking at Chelsea.
This is according to the Telegraph (Subscription Required), who state that Spurs had shown interest in Potter previously. However, they are not likely to hire him as their next coach given how he departed the Blues.
Potter was sacked by Chelsea on 1 April following a 2-0 league loss against Aston Villa. The Blues won just four out of their 16 matches across competitions under the Englishman in 2023.
That’s a shocking record, especially given the club’s investment in the two transfer windows under new owner Todd Boehly. Spurs themselves parted ways with Antonio Conte in March and now have Cristian Stellini as the interim manager until the summer.
Right call?
Potter was very highly rated during his time at Brighton & Hove Albion when he transformed the Seagulls into a club that played attractive football and took on the big six clubs head-on in high-profile matches.
His reputation would have taken a hit after being sacked by the Blues without completing even seven months at the club. It’s best for Spurs to stay clear now.
Perhaps Potter can be out of his depth at a truly big club like Chelsea or Spurs. We shouldn’t be the ones to take a chance on him, especially at a time when the club is struggling for an identity and is more desperate for success than ever.

There are pretty good free agents in the market right now, especially Julian Nagelsmann, who was sacked by Bayern Munich last month. However, Chelsea are also in the market for a new permanent boss and hence, while we should take our time to do the research before hiring a new manager, we can’t afford to take too long.
