Former Tottenham Hotspur right-back Matt Doherty ‘will not continue’ at Atletico Madrid
Matt Doherty, who joined Atletico Madrid after leaving Tottenham Hotspur in January, ‘will not continue’ at Los Rojiblancos, according to Spanish outlet Sport.
Spurs mutually terminated the Ireland international’s contract on deadline day in the previous transfer window so that he could join the La Liga outfit. As a result, the full-back joined the Cívitas Metropolitano side for free.
However, Doherty has not enjoyed the best of spells at Atletico. Los Rojiblancos only signed the 31-year-old on a six-month contract. Now, he is expected to leave as the right-back does not feature in Diego Simeone’s plans.
The Irish national has made just one appearance so far for the Spanish giants. He came on as a substitute late in the second half in the 6-1 win over Sevilla. The Madrid-based club have relied on Nahuel Molina at right-back for most of the season.
Doherty established himself at Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 31-year-old developed into a decent full-back at the Molineux Stadium side.
After impressing at Wolves in the Premier League, Tottenham came knocking for the Ireland international’s signature in the summer of 2020. However, he was unable to make a mark at the North London side.
During Doherty’s time at Spurs, he played under Jose Mourinho, former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte. However, the 31-year-old was unable to convince any of the managers at N17.
For Tottenham over the years, the Irish national made 71 appearances in all competitions. He found the back of the net three times and provided eight assists and was unable to put in consistent performances. Emerson Royal is in the Lilywhites’ ranks, while we also signed Pedro Porro in January.
