Why Tottenham Hotspur aren’t entering Giorgi Mamardashvili talks amid Chelsea, Leicester City interest
Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Leicester City have all supposedly been linked with a move for 22-year-old Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Writing for his exclusive CaughtOffside column, Romano said:
“Leicester have approached Giorgi Mamardashvili by meeting his agent a few days ago, but in this case, it depends on their future in the Premier League.
“I’m told Tottenham and Chelsea are informed on the conditions of the deal but there’s no time to enter into advanced talks as both clubs don’t know who their new coach will be yet; and that’s a crucial step before making a decision on goalkeepers.”
Spurs are currently being managed by interim boss Cristian Stellini and assistant manager Ryan Mason after Antonio Conte left by mutual consent in March. The situation at Chelsea is not too different.
What should Spurs do?
They recently sacked Graham Potter and hired Frank Lampard as a caretaker boss before finding a more permanent solution. Of course, this season will be an audition for the two interim managers to prove their case to be permanent bosses.
But one can safely assume that both the London giants will want a more tried and tested name at the helm. Managers can and have been picky about the type of goalkeepers they want.
Pep Guardiola binning Manchester City icon Joe Hart to bring in Ederson Moraes from SL Benfica is a perfect example of this. Hence, it makes sense that Spurs aren’t entering talks with Mamardashvili until a new manager is confirmed.
However, we have to be wary of other suitors. Leicester City could take advantage of Chelsea and Spurs’ inactivity in this regard. It will be ideal if the Lilywhites draw up a shortlist of potential successors for 36-year-old Hugo Lloris.

This list can contain players with varied playing styles and once we appoint a new boss, the club can then pursue the ideal candidate from the shortlist. Mamardashvili, who has been capped seven times for Georgia and has 32 appearances this season, should be one of the names we keep track of.
