Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton charged for touchline incident in PL clash
Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion played out a feisty clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 8.
The Lilywhites scraped through with a 2-1 win courtesy of some favourable decisions from referee Stuart Atwell and VAR. Notably, the Seagulls were denied two penalty calls and had a goal from Kaoru Mitoma ruled out for handball.
One notable incident saw Roberto De Zerbi and Cristian Stellini red-carded as tempers flared throughout the course of the second half. Benches of both teams were involved in that scuffle.
Stellini wasn’t directly involved in the altercation but was sent off nonetheless for failing to control his bench. The two teams have now been sanctioned for the incident and the FA have released a statement saying (h/t Evening Standard):
“Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion have been charged for a mass confrontation that took place during the 58th minute of their Premier League game on Saturday 8 April.
“It’s alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their technical area occupants conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or do not behave in a way which is improper. Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion have until Monday 18 April to respond”
Both the Italian managers avoided separate sanctions for their behaviour. It remains to be seen if either team will appeal to the FA regarding the sanctions or if they will take it in their stride.
Considering we eventually won the game, it’s best to forget what transpired last weekend and look forward. Ryan Mason is the assistant manager and could be the man to be called into action whenever Stellini isn’t available.

What’s done is done. Things get feisty considering what is at stake for both teams here. Brighton are pushing for an unlikely spot in European competitions while we still have major hopes of making the top four this season. We trail fourth-placed Manchester United by three points, who have a game in hand.
