Burnley manager Vincent Kompany breaks silence on Tottenham Hotspur links
Vincent Kompany has apparently become Tottenham Hotspur’s No. 1 choice to permanently replace Antonio Conte at the managerial helm.
The Italian tactician left the club by mutual consent during the March international break, after which Cristian Stellini was made the interim manager. The search for a new permanent boss is going on in N17.
Kompany, who has ensured Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League next season, has been a prominent name in papers with regard to the Spurs job. He has now given his verdict on being linked with a move away from the Clarets.
The former Manchester City and Belgium centre-back said (h/t Metro):
“I don’t waste answers on my future. I said it on day one of my job here at Burnley, that one day in anticipation that there might be a question like this, so crack on.
“I am focusing on Reading and the next games… I know the question but what can I say? Am I going to say I am not happy? We are 14 points clear at the top of the Championship, so we are all right. The key part is always be happy, never satisfied.”
Kompany shouldn’t flatter himself already. What we need is a proven manager with a proven track record of winning trophies. Premier League and the Championship are two very different leagues.
Of course, taking a chance on a former player can work out very well, as it did for Real Madrid with Zinedine Zidane and to some extent, Barcelona with Xavi Hernandez. But the examples of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have shown how it can backfire for a Premier League club as well.
Spurs would be wise to hire an experienced, world-class coach with experience managing a top first-division club. Kompany has some experience with Anderlecht and with Burnley. Let’s not discredit what he has achieved until now and he has fully deserved (potentially) winning the Championship this season.
