Barcelona hopeful of Tottenham signing Clement Lenglet in the summer
According to Spanish publication Marca, Barcelona remain hopeful of Tottenham Hotspur signing French centre-back Clement Lenglet in the summer on a permanent deal.
The French centre-back has been on loan at Tottenham since last summer and has become a regular in the starting lineup, making 30 appearances this season. His performances have been solid to say the least.
However, despite his successful stint at the North London club, it appears that Lenglet’s future at Barcelona is uncertain. Barcelona is not counting on the 27-year-old to represent them next season, despite having a contract until 2026.
It is believed that Xavi Hernandez, the current manager of Barcelona, has the centre-back position covered, and with the imminent arrival of Athletic Club Bilbao’s Íñigo Martínez on a free transfer, Lenglet’s future at the club seems bleak.
Barcelona are reportedly keen to get Tottenham to buy Lenglet for a fee between €10m and €15m in the summer, and with the player’s successful spell at Tottenham so far, it’s not hard to see why.
The North London club could seal a bargain deal for an experienced player like Lenglet, who has proven himself to be a reliable defender in the Premier League. Whilst there has not been anything extraordinary, things have been steady with the Frenchman.
However, the current technical changes at Tottenham, with Antonio Conte leaving the club last month and Fabio Paratici taking a leave of absence, have hindered Barcelona from opening talks with the club.
For Tottenham, the potential signing of Lenglet could be a significant boost to their defensive options. The Frenchman has formed a solid partnership with fellow centre-backs Eric Dier and Cristian Romero, and his presence on the pitch has been invaluable to the team’s performances.
