Tottenham Hotspur begin contract talks with England international Eric Dier

Tottenham Hotspur have ‘started contacts’ with the representatives of England international Eric Dier over a new contract, according to Football Inside via Calciomercato.

The centre-back’s existing deal with the North London side is set to expire in the summer of 2024. Spurs are hoping to tie down the 29-year-old for two more years until 2026.

Dier signed for Tottenham in the summer of 2014 from Sporting CP. The English national became a key player for the Lilywhites under Mauricio Pochettino and developed into a fine defender.

The Argentine head coach used the 29-year-old as a defensive midfielder as well as a centre-back. However, over the years, he has been inconsistent for the North London side.

Under Jose Mourinho, Dier found himself in and out of the team. However, in the Portuguese gaffer’s final season, the defender became a pivotal player for Spurs.

However, since then, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte have come and gone. Unfortunately, Tottenham’s defence has left a lot to be desired.

In the previous campaign under the Italian manager, the English national seemingly found his feet. The 29-year-old continued his form at the start of the 2022/23 season. But the centre-back has been underwhelming as of late.

For some time now, Dier has been the leader of Spurs’ backline. The defender has been playing in the middle of the back-three for the North London side. Cristian Romero, Ben Davis and Clement Lenglet have partnered the English national for the majority of this term.

The 29-year-old has not done enough to warrant a new contract. However, it looks like Tottenham are keen on extending his stay at N17. But it is a wise move in terms of protecting the centre-back’s value and not losing him for free at the end of next season.
