Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte tipped to take over AS Roma in the summer
According to the Sun, former Spurs boss Antonio Conte has been linked with taking over the AS Roma job in the summer.
The Italian coach left his position at Spurs in March following a public outburst about the club and its players after a 3-3 draw with Southampton. While it was expected that Conte would leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expired, he could be set to take on a new challenge in Italy’s Serie A.
Conte’s appointment at Roma is dependent on whether current manager Jose Mourinho remains in charge. The Portuguese head coach has been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, which could open up the door for Conte to assume control of the Italian side.
Roma are currently third in the Serie A standings and are looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Feyenoord in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie on Thursday. The club’s success this season, coupled with their recent win in the Europa Conference League, has put them in a strong position.
Should Conte take over at Roma, he would want to be given funds in the transfer market to strengthen the squad. The Italian coach has a proven track record of success, having won four Serie A titles as a manager – three with Juventus and one with Inter Milan.
While both Juve and Inter are also thought to be interested in bringing Conte back to their clubs, the Italian manager might want to take up a new project and what Mourinho is building at Roma is impressive.
Conte’s potential move to Roma would be a significant coup for the Italian club. The coach has a reputation for being one of the best in the business and would bring a wealth of experience and tactical nous to the side.
For Tottenham Hotspur, the departure of Conte has left the club searching for a new manager. While the Italian coach was only in charge for 16 months, his tenure was marked by some high-profile clashes with players and a lack of consistency on the pitch.
