Tottenham Hotspur make contact with Napoli for Italian shot-stopper Alex Meret
Tottenham Hotspur have made contact with Napoli and ‘asked’ for information regarding Italy international Alex Meret, according to La Repubblica via AreaNapoli.
Spurs seem to be interested in the 26-year-old. However, for now, the Partenopei and the shot-stopper have demanded to be given time until the end of the season before getting into any discussions.
The Serie A giants’ chief Cristiano Giuntoli is set to meet with Federico Pastorello, the agent of Meret. Either the goalkeeper will sign a new contract at the club or Luciano Spalletti’s team will listen to offers for him.
In the summer of 2018, the Italian signed for Napoli. Subsequently, he established himself as a key player for the Partenopei before losing his place in between the sticks last season.
However, the 26-year-old has bounced back in fine fashion and has been pivotal in the Naples-based club’s success at the moment. The Serie A giants are on course to lift the Scudetto after over three decades.
Meret was also impressive in Napoli’s run in the Champions League. In the second leg of the quarter-finals against AC Milan, the Italian managed to save a penalty. But the Partenopei lost 2-1 on aggregate in the end.
Tottenham’s goalkeeping department has relied on Hugo Lloris for over a decade now. Unfortunately, the French national seems to have lost a step in the last few years.
In the current campaign, the 36-year-old has been culpable for a few goals that we have conceded. Apart from the veteran shot-stopper, Spurs have Fraser Forster in their ranks, who himself is 35.

Therefore, the North London side evidently need to sign a new goalkeeper sooner rather than later. But will Meret be the one to replace Lloris as the number one? Only time will tell.
