Tottenham Hotspur supremo Daniel Levy has his say on the new UEFA rules for next season

Speaking to Cambridge Union as quoted by Football. London, Daniel Levy has had his say on the new transfer rules set to be imposed by UEFA next season.

Levy believes that these rules will have a significant impact on the financing of football, limiting the amount of money that clubs can spend on both wages and transfer fees. This comes in the aftermath of some ridiculous numbers spent by Chelsea this season.

The past few years have seen the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City spend vast sums of money on new players, leading to multiple trophies for both clubs. The two clubs however have gone in completely different directions since.

Levy, however, is not concerned about this new challenge. He believes that the new UEFA rules will level the playing field, making it harder for clubs to simply spend their way to success. He believes that the smaller clubs can improve.

Levy explained that these new regulations will make sustainability a priority and make things much more even

“Firstly there are new laws coming into effect this season, UEFA rules, where sustainability is going to become much more paramount in people’s minds so you’ll be limited in the amount you can spend on wages and transfer fees, effectively the amortisation element. That’s a percentage of your total turnover”

Levy sees this as a positive step forward for the sport, as it will allow smaller clubs like Tottenham to compete with the big spenders. He points out that success on the pitch is not solely based on how much money a club spends, but rather on how they choose to allocate those funds.

Tottenham or any club for that matter don’t need to look too far beyond Brighton to know that money does not necessarily buy you success in football. What De Zerbi is doing with the talented squad that he has deserves some recognition.

On the other hand, Chelsea stand as an example for clubs to know that throwing money at everything does not result in much. The Blues are languishing in the table and can’t score a goal to save their lives.

While Tottenham has certainly made some questionable purchases in the past, Levy remains confident in the club’s ability to succeed within these new regulations. The club have never been humongous spenders. They must get wiser in the transfer market though.
