Tottenham Hotspur in advanced talks to sign Clement Lenglet
According to Spanish publication Sport, Tottenham Hotspur are in advanced talks to sign on-loan Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet on a permanent deal.
The centre-back has been on loan at the English outfit since the start of the 2022/23 season, but his loan deal did not include an option to buy him on a permanent transfer. However, it looks like the English club are interested.
Despite a relatively underwhelming loan spell, Spurs are keen on reinforcing their squad ahead of the upcoming season before a new manager arrives. Lenglet has been identified as one of the options.
While some fans may be sceptical of Lenglet’s performances during his loan spell, the 26-year-old has played under difficult circumstances with injuries and inconsistent performances throughout the team.
It is essential to consider the quality Lenglet possesses, as he has previously demonstrated his talent during his time at Barcelona and Sevilla. However, there is a ceiling that the Frenchman possesses.
Furthermore, Lenglet’s arrival could bring much-needed competition to the Tottenham squad, as the team has struggled with depth in defensive positions. The existing options sans Cristian Romero do not inspire us with much confidence.
Barcelona are said to be looking for €12 million for Lenglet, with negotiations between the two clubs reportedly moving quickly due to interest from other parties. Inter Milan have reportedly inquired about the Frenchman’s availability, highlighting the interest in Lenglet’s services.
With Barcelona already possessing a wealth of defensive options, including the likes of Jules Kounde, Ronald Araujo, and Eric Garcia, Lenglet is not in the Catalan club’s plans for next season. The player himself is reportedly content with leaving the club and is eager to secure a new challenge in his career.
