Journalist explains why Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Burnley’s Vincent Kompany
Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has explained that Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Burnley manager Vincent Kompany stems from their desire to find the ‘new Mauricio Pochettino’.
Interest in the Belgian manager wouldn’t make sense to some Spurs fans. The 37-year-old is finding his way as a manager of a Championship and is not tested at the very top level.
He has some experience at RSC Anderlecht and now Burnley but that’s it. The Clarets had a strong team that aided them towards promotion and potentially the Championship title.
Kompany’s good work there cannot be undermined but he has to do it for a number of years to properly warrant being at a club like Tottenham. According to Balague, Spurs want to sign a new manager who can become a world-class tactician in the future.
According to him, the Lilywhites haven’t formalised any potential interest in the actual Mauricio Pochettino. The former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Spurs boss is close to being appointed by Chelsea.
He tweeted:
“It feels Pochettino and Spurs are in different places right now. Spurs are after a less experienced manager, the new ‘Pochettino’, hence the interest in Vincent Kompany. The only contact related to the Spurs job with Poche was indirect and nothing was offered.”
When Pochettino was hired by Spurs in 2014, he had around a year-and-a-half worth of experience at Southampton in the Premier League where they made them one of the most exciting teams in the league.
He had also managed Spanish side Espanyol for more than three and a half years before that. All in all, he had more experience and more credibility than Kompany does now.
