Manchester City join Tottenham and Man United in Kim Min-jae race
According to the Sun, Manchester City have joined Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United for Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae.
The 26-year-old has been dubbed ‘The Monster’ and is regarded as one of Serie A’s hottest stars, having enjoyed a stunning season. Napoli signed Kim for £15m last summer and the Italians are keen to offer him a new deal.
Pep Guardiola is an admirer of Kim and sees him as a valuable addition to City’s already well-stocked centre-back position, which currently includes Ruben Dias, John Stones, Nathan Ake, Manuel Akanji, and Aymeric Laporte.
Although Laporte has struggled with injuries, Stones and Ake have both excelled as inverted full-backs this season. Guardiola may be willing to let Laporte leave to make way for Kim, and could even be interested in RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol.
Gvardiol has been linked with Chelsea in the past, but the 21-year-old Croat is expected to leave the Bundesliga this summer. Guardiola is a fan of his physicality and versatility, and Gvardiol’s reputation has continued to grow.
City’s interest in Kim comes as no surprise, given the Korean’s impressive performances in Serie A this season. He is a strong and aggressive defender, who has proven to be a tough opponent for strikers.
Kim has the ability to read the game well and is comfortable on the ball, making him an excellent fit for Guardiola’s possession-based style of play. He could slot in seamlessly alongside Dias, who has been a revelation since joining City last summer.
While Tottenham has also been linked with Kim, City’s financial clout and Guardiola’s reputation for developing young players could give them the edge in the race to sign him.
