Chris Waddle highlights major Tottenham Hotspur problem after Liverpool defeat

Chris Waddle, who played as a winger for Tottenham Hotspur from 1985 to 1989, is not happy with his former club’s defence after their 4-3 Premier League loss against Liverpool on Sunday.

The Reds raced to a 3-0 lead within the first 21 minutes before Spurs pulled level via a Richarlison header in second-half stoppage. Lucas Moura then gifted Diogo Jota the ball to hand Liverpool a late, late win at Anfield.

Spurs’ defence was horrible in the game. They left Curtis Jones unmarked for the opening goal and allowed Cody Gakpo to send in a cross to Luis Diaz, who got ahead of everyone at the near post (something that should never happen).

Cristian Romero’s horribly timed tackle on Gakpo then resulted in Mohamed Salah’s goal from the penalty spot. All four goals could have been prevented.

After the game, Waddle, who was giving his analysis on the game, said, via BBC:

“Tottenham are leaking goals, six at Newcastle and four here. It’s not good enough.”

The 6-1 loss against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park in the league was a horror show. Cristian Stellini, who is now sacked, started a back-four with Ivan Perisic and Pedro Porro in defence.

The result? We were being cut open for fun by the Toons. Our defence just hasn’t been good enough this season. Romero is arguably our best centre-back but he also has his rash moments. Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga are average at best.

Our full-backs aren’t really specialising in defending. The fact is, Spurs haven’t kept a clean sheet in nine straight Premier League games. That is a horrific record for a team that is a ‘big six’ side.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

Centre-backs should be a priority this summer, and perhaps a full-back and a new goalkeeper to become Hugo Lloris’ long-term successor. Exactly which players join us will, of course, depend on who our permanent manager is. But the general idea should be the same – to strengthen at the back urgently.
