Tottenham Hotspur have scouted James Ward-Prowse of Southampton and Lyon’s Castello Lukeba

Tottenham Hotspur scouts have apparently had a busy few days, scouting Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse and Olympique Lyonnais youngster Castello Lukeba.

This is according to the Daily Mail, who claim that Spurs’ scouts were present in the Saints’ 3-1 loss against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday. The free-kick specialist, who captains Southampton, played the full 90 minutes.

Not really a lot to scout there. The English central midfielder is known quantity at this point, famous for his world-class set-piece-taking skills who has a neat pass on him.

Interestingly, Spurs also sent scouts to watch Lyon centre-back Lukeba play against RC Strasbourg on Friday in Ligue 1. Lukeba had an eventful game, scoring in the 32nd minute as his team won 2-1 at the Stade de la Meinau.

Spurs shouldn’t go for Lukeba

He was then sent off for a second bookable offence in second-off stoppage time but his team held on for three points. They are now six points off European spots in Ligue 1 table with five games to go.

Southampton, meanwhile, look destined to be relegated. Spurs alongside Newcastle United are waiting to see if the Saints go down so they can launch an offensive for Ward-Prowse.

This move will make sense. We can always use a classy homegrown midfielder who can feed in balls with accuracy and consistency to our forwards. Ward-Prowse will add depth and quality to our midfield, that is for sure.

And so will a move for Lukeba. We have Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga as our first-team options who are largely average and can desperately be upgraded on. They seem to have a mistake in them whenever they play.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

Cristian Romero is perhaps our best centre-back but we need way more depth in the centre-back area. Joe Rodon’s future here is shaky as well. We need two centre-back signings this summer for sure and if Lukeba is one of them, then Spurs fans wouldn’t have any complaints, given his ability and potential.
