Xabi Alonso emerges as a front-runner for the Tottenham Hotspur job
According to the Mirror, Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has emerged as a favourite for the Tottenham Hotspur job to take over as the manager next season.
Alonso has emerged as a serious contender for the vacant Tottenham manager’s job. After an impressive start to his managerial career at Bayer Leverkusen, the former Spain and Liverpool midfielder is now being tipped to make a move to the Premier League.
Alonso took over at Leverkusen in October last year when the club was struggling near the bottom of the Bundesliga table. He managed to guide the team to a remarkable turnaround, taking them up the table and into the semi-finals of the Europa League.
His tactical nous, man-management skills and ability to get the best out of his players have not gone unnoticed, with Tottenham now reportedly keen on his services. Such has been his prowess that he is considered one of the most intelligent young minds going around.
Since Antonio Conte left in March, Tottenham have been searching for a new permanent manager. The interim appointment of Cristian Stellini proved to be unsuccessful, and Ryan Mason is now in his second spell in charge.
However, with no full-time hire yet made, Tottenham fans are growing restless and are looking for a big-name appointment to lead the club forward. The club seem to be working in the background to get a good appointment done.
Alonso’s calibre as a player is said to give him an advantage over fellow contender Arne Slot. Slot has impressed at Feyenoord, leading them to the verge of winning the Eredivisie title. However, Leverkusen’s progress in Europe under Alonso has caught the eye of Tottenham’s board.
Julian Nagelsmann, the former Bayern Munich boss, is another name to have been linked with the Tottenham job. However, questions over the club’s next sporting director have cast doubt on that move.
