Rodrigo Bentancur unlikely to feature for Tottenham until November
According to the Athletic (Subscription Required), Rodrigo Bentancur is unlikely to feature for Tottenham Hotspur at least until November in what has been a huge blow to the club.
Bentancur was quickly establishing himself as one of Tottenham’s most important players before his injury. His ability to retain possession and play penetrative passes made him a vital cog in Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 formation.
Unlike his midfield partner Yves Bissouma, who was named on the bench for Tottenham’s recent game against Crystal Palace, Rodrigo Bentancur is not likely to feature until November. This is not good news for Spurs.
This news is undoubtedly a huge blow for Tottenham. Bentancur is the best central midfielder at the club, and his absence has left a significant void in the team. Tottenham has struggled to retain possession and create chances in Bentancur’s absence.
However, this setback further emphasizes the need for reinforcements in the middle of the park, irrespective of the formation the next head coach employs. Tottenham cannot rely solely on Bentancur’s return to improve their fortunes.
The midfield has been a problem area for Tottenham for some time, and it is an area that requires significant investment in the transfer market. Even when Bentancur returns, we need better players.
Tottenham’s midfield lacks creativity, dynamism and defensive solidity. Our existing options are merely functional in nature. We need a player who adds a creative playmaking presence to our team.
The new head coach must address this issue in the summer transfer window. Tottenham must be willing to invest in a top-quality central midfielder who can add a new dimension to their play.
