Djed Spence will return to Tottenham after picking up a knee injury

Speaking to Rennes’ official website, manager Bruno Genesio has confirmed that Djed Spence will return to Tottenham and continue his recovery with his parent club.

Spence’s journey at Tottenham has been a mixed bag so far. He arrived at the start of the season in a promising £20m deal, filled with aspirations of making a name for himself at the club.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned, and he fell out of favour with former manager Antonio Conte, prompting him to seek regular playing time elsewhere. During his time at Rennes, Spence has shown glimpses of his potential.

However, an injury has seen his time cut short at the club and here is what Rennes’ manager had to say

“Djed Spence injured his knee, he is out until the end of the season due to a sprain. He will also return to Tottenham to take care of himself there”

This experience has undoubtedly aided his development, and he will be eager to translate his progress into securing a place in the starting lineup next season. However, it will be difficult as things stand.

With Tottenham expected to appoint a permanent replacement for Conte at the end of the season, Spence faces a crucial period in his career. The arrival of Pedro Porro from Sporting CP during the January transfer window has added competition for the right-back position.

However, Spence shouldn’t be disheartened. His performances in the Championship last season were exceptional, showcasing his talent and potential to thrive in the demanding environment of the Premier League.

Ultimately, it boils down to the opportunities presented to him. If Tottenham cannot provide Spence with regular first-team football, it would be in his best interest to consider a departure at the end of the season.
