Pre-match press conference: Tottenham Hotspur’s Ryan Mason addresses Hugo Lloris’ links to Saudi Arabian club

Tottenham Hotspur’s interim manager Ryan Mason refused to give a straight answer when asked about Hugo Lloris’ links with an unnamed Saudi Arabian club in recent weeks.

The Times (Subscription Required) carried news this week that an unnamed Saudi club has offered to triple Lloris’ current wages. The Frenchman’s contract expires in June 2024.

It is no secret that Spurs are looking for a replacement goalkeeper for the long term, with Fraser Forster also in his mid-30s. Asked about Lloris’ links away from N17, Mason responded at his pre-match press conference, via Football.London:

“First of all we are talking about hypothetical situation in terms of an individual. At same time we recognise the next three games are important for us and then I’m sure those conversations will happen. We know we have a big squad, with players coming back from loan.

“Maybe the club want to do some business, I’m not sure. It’s not necessarily always the right and best option. That’s two or three weeks’ time. We can’t look to far ahead. We need to focus on now because these three games are important to finish the season well.

The 31-year-old has said a whole lot of nothing there, but perhaps that is what is required in this situation. He isn’t the club’s permanent manager (at least not right now) and can’t give away details about Lloris’ potential transfer before it happens.

Lloris, 36, is clearly past his best. He has retired from France’s national team and has been bothered by two separate but considerably serious injury problems this season, which is why he is currently out of action.

If we get a good offer for him, it’s best we sell him and rake in some money at the very least for his transfer rather than losing him on a free. He has been a brilliant servant – arguably our best-ever ‘keeper in the modern era – but all great things must come to an end.
