Jermaine Pennant believes Brentford forward Ivan Toney is the ideal replacement for Harry Kane if decides to leave Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur post the ending of this season will be entering a very delicate stage with regards to the contract situation surrounding Harry Kane.
Kane’s contract expires in June 2024 and till now the player has shown much inclination towards signing a contract extension. If that remains the case, then it presents Daniel Levy and the forthcoming manager with a real dilemma on their hands.
They could prevent any transfer talk surrounding Kane and risk losing him for free when his contract expires or allow the star striker to leave and gain a sizable fee which could be further reinvested in the squad.
If the England captain does end up leaving, Spurs will be in the market for a top-quality striker and former Spurs player Jermaine Pennant, while speaking to TalkSport (h/t Football London) believes the club should look at Brentford forward Ivan Toney.
“£100million is fair [for Toney]. The reason being, if you look at Jack Grealish, he cost £100 million from Aston Villa. Strikers are at a premium. You always pay more for strikers, then you get an English premium added onto that as well. With all those combined, then you are looking at £100 million.
If you look at the best stats for an English striker, he is just shy behind Harry Kane. He is England’s number two. He’s similar to Harry Kane himself. If Kane was to leave in the summer, then I think a perfect fit would be Ivan Toney, without a shadow of a doubt.”
Toney, 27, is having an impressive season with Brentford in helping the Bees stay in the top half of the table and has scored 21 goals and provided 5 assists this term in all competitions.
These are very good stats for a player plying his trade at a team known for its defensive prowess more than attacking flair. More than just his goalscoring exploits, it is his ability to hold the play and act as an additional playmaker, similar to how Kane does it at Spurs.

Hence, it could be said that in a situation where Kane ends up leaving, Toney is definitely a profile that the Spurs should look at. Hopefully, it doesn’t come to that, though. Pairing Toney and Kane up front is a tasty prospect too but we doubt that will happen.
