PSG willing to meet Tottenham Hotspur target Manuel Ugarte’s release clause

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are willing to meet the release clause of Tottenham Hotspur target and Sporting CP midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

This is according to Portuguese outlet A Bola, who state that Aston Villa are also in the running for the 22-year-old star. Ugarte has shown this season that he is one of the finest young defensive midfielders around.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg hardly has competition for his spot in defensive midfield and while Oliver Skipp, Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have impressed in certain games, they just aren’t there yet in terms of being world-class midfielders.

Ugarte’s ceiling is very high. He is a regular starter in manager Ruben Amorim’s impressive Sporting CP team and specialises in breaking up play and kickstarting counterattacks from deep.

Spurs should go in for him

Moreover, he is young and has a lot of years still ahead of him. An injury to Rodrigo Bentancur earlier this year really derailed our season, showcasing the need for depth in midfield.

Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Winks also look set to return to Spurs from their loan spells this summer. But Ugarte would certainly be an upgrade on them from what we have seen of the Uruguay international this season.

PSG’s inclusion and financial power is of course a threat to Tottenham. They can offer him constant participation in the UEFA Champions League as well as the chance to play alongside some of Europe’s finest players.

Chelsea are also said to be in the race for him, as per Fabrizio Romano. The Blues signed Enzo Fernandez in January and could be looking for a young midfielder to partner him for years to come.

Hopefully, Spurs have their chequebook ready to make an offer that Sporting and Uruguayan midfielder can’t refuse. But if PSG start flexing their financial muscles, it would be hard for the Lilywhites to match their clout.
