Galetti says Tottenham Hotspur are ‘leading’ David Raya race amid Chelsea links
Recently, Daily Mail claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are in the race for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya with Chelsea also keen on signing him.
Now, journalist Rudy Galetti has claimed that Spurs are leading the race for the 27-year-old Spain international. He exclusively told GiveMeSport:
“At the moment, we can say Spurs are leading the race for the Spanish goalkeeper. He’s considered one of the main targets to replace Lloris, who unless a sensational twist, will say goodbye in June. As for the coach situation, there will be concrete developments only when the new director has been chosen.”
Lloris, 36, is said to be considering an offer he has received from a Saudi Arabian club. His contract expires in the summer of 2024 and his injury-ridden season coupled with high-profile errors has made it clear his time at Spurs could soon be up.
Time for a step up
Raya has made a huge impression at Brentford and has shown his capabilities as a competent shot-stopper. He could further enhance his reputation at a ‘big six’ club like Tottenham.
Spurs, meanwhile, would gain a goalie who is very much in his prime years. Brentford, with all due respect, aren’t as big a club as Tottenham – at least not right now.
This would be a step up for him. Moreover, there will be a clear path to the first team for him in N17 after Lloris’ departure. Even if the Frenchman stays, it is clear that he isn’t here for long and neither is 35-year-old Fraser Forster.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga. Unless they offload both, which would be quite a sight, Raya will always have the insecurity of potentially becoming No. 2.
