Dimitar Berbatov: Harry Kane will stay at Tottenham Hotspur despite Manchester United interest
Dimitar Berbatov will probably understand what Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane is going through right now amidst interest from Manchester United.
The England international is a target for the Red Devils ahead of the summer transfer window. His deal expires in the summer of 2024 but it has been said that Spurs could let him leave as a free agent instead of selling him to Manchester United this summer.
Berbatov, who is a legend for Bulgaria and played two seasons for Spurs before moving to Manchester United in 2008, exclusively told SportBible:
“He’s still there as someone being linked to United and probably will be all summer long. We’re going to watch another soap opera, probably. But I think he’s gonna stay at Spurs because his legacy there now is too big. His legacy is enormous.
“He is their leading goalscorer and when you say Spurs, the first thing that comes to mind is Harry Kane. So I don’t think he wants to tarnish that legacy. He’s going to stay there in my opinion.”
Hopefully, Berbatov is right. The two striker’s situations are different and can’t really be compared. Kane is a homegrown player who has come through the academy here.
He is truly one of our own. Berbatov was a brilliant foreign export in the Premier League and didn’t share that connection with the city or the club as Kane does.
Berbatov’s career, however, shows what Kane can achieve. The Bulgarian spent four seasons at Manchester United, winning two Premier League titles and the Premier League golden boot with them.
Man United will also play in the UEFA Champions League next season while Spurs won’t. It is truly a unique situation where one can empathise with Kane. With the way Spurs have been run in the past two decades…. one can’t blame our best players for wanting to leave when a big club comes calling.

Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Rafael van der Vaart are some examples of that. But our fans wouldn’t really want to equate Real Madrid with Manchester United. They would believe, and rightly so, that we are as likely to win silverware in the near future as the Red Devils. That should be our level.
