Alasdair Gold says Destiny Udogie will have to work on his defensive game before Tottenham Hotspur return
Speaking on his Youtube channel, Tottenham Hotspur journalist Alasdair Gold has shed light on the defensive capabilities of young talent Destiny Udogie.
Gold suggests that while Udogie shows promise, he needs to refine his defensive game before he can fully claim the left-back position at Spurs. It is an area of the game where he needs to work on.
With the summer transfer window on the horizon, Tottenham might be preparing for some significant changes in their left-back department. The potential departure of Antonio Conte signing Ivan Perisic could pave the way for a new left-back to join the squad.
Furthermore, Ryan Sessegnon’s injury-riddled season might lead the club to consider parting ways with the young player and seek alternatives in the market. They need someone more reliable at the club.
Adding to the mix, Ben Davies, a long-serving member of the squad, might also find his days numbered at Tottenham. He has though become more of a centre-back these days than a full-back.
Amidst these potential changes, Tottenham will welcome the return of Destiny Udogie from his loan spell at Udinese. Alasdair Gold believes that while Udogie has shown promise, he must focus on improving his defensive skills in order to solidify his place in the team’s backline.
“Don’t forget Destiny Udogie is coming in as well. He is another one, like Porro, we are going to have to see if someone plays a back four, can he play as a left-back? My thinking is that he probably can. One thing I have seen coaches say is that one thing he does have to improve on is his defending.”
However, Gold also mentioned that Udogie’s playing style may make it easier for him to transition into a left-back role, as he possesses qualities that lie between those of a flying wingback and a traditional left-winger.
While Udogie has showcased his potential during his loan spell in Italy, it is clear that his defensive game needs further development to meet the demands of Tottenham’s backline. He is young and talented though.
