Tottenham Hotspur to battle Newcastle United for Leicester City midfielder James Maddison

Tottenham Hotspur are willing to go toe-to-toe with Premier League rivals Newcastle United to sign Leicester City midfielder James Maddison, according to the Daily Mirror (h/t Independent).

Ange Postecoglou is expected to be appointed as the North London side’s new manager soon. Spurs are prepared to back the Australian and are going to rebuild the squad for the new head coach.

To that end, Tottenham are ready to battle the Magpies to acquire the services of the King Power Stadium side’s playmaker. The 26-year-old has been relegated with the Foxes from the Premier League.

Maddison has been one of the best players in the English top flight for some time now. However, even the England international’s quality was not enough to help Leicester survive the drop.

The King Power Stadium side will play in the Championship in the upcoming campaign. Therefore, it would be a surprise to see the 26-year-old stay with the Foxes for another season.

Newcastle are flying high under Eddie Howe. The Tyneside outfit are set to play in the Champions League in the 2023/24 term after finishing fourth in the league table. The Magpies have quality players like Bruno Guimaraes at their disposal. Joelinton has also been impressive in the middle of the park.

As for Tottenham, buying an attack-minded midfielder should evidently be our priority in the summer. The likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Yves Bissouam and Oliver Skipp are known to be more defensive in their play.

Rodrigo Bentancur was doing well for us before being sidelined. Without the Uruguay international, our threat from the engine room has seemingly dwindled.

Therefore, a move for Maddison looks like the one to aim for. However, will Newcastle pose a threat to Spurs’ pursuit of the England international? Only time will tell.
