Gabby Agbonlahor says Oliver Skipp is not ready for Tottenham Hotspur

Speaking to talkSPORT, Gabby Agbonlahor, the former Aston Villa striker, has recently voiced his opinion on Tottenham Hotspur’s midfield situation, expressing his belief that the club is in dire need of reinforcements in that area.

Agbonlahor specifically pointed out Oliver Skipp, a product of the Spurs academy, stating that he does not consider the young midfielder to be up to the standard required to start consistently for the club.

During the final months of the campaign, Tottenham faced a midfield crisis due to injuries to key players such as Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur. As a result, Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg were thrust into the starting lineup for almost every game until the return of Bissouma in the last two matches against Brentford and Leeds United.

This stretch proved to be challenging for Spurs, as they struggled to achieve positive results and ultimately finished in eighth place. The performances of Skipp and Hojbjerg during this period drew a fair share of criticism from fans and pundits alike.

Agbonlahor’s remarks align with the growing sentiment that Tottenham’s midfield was not up to par, prompting calls for the club to enter the transfer market for a central midfielder this summer.

Speaking about the talented young Skipp, here is what the former Aston Villa striker had to say

“Spurs are crying out for midfielders, when they’ve had injuries, they’ve got Oliver Skipp playing who I do like him but I don’t think is at the level that Spurs should be having in their side.”

Agbonlahor did acknowledge his appreciation for Skipp as a player, highlighting his potential and talent. However, he firmly believes that the 20-year-old is still developing and not quite at the level required to start consistently for a club of Tottenham’s stature.

The criticism of Skipp does not come as a surprise, considering his age and relative lack of experience compared to other midfielders in the Premier League. While he has shown promise and determination, he still has much to learn and improve upon.

Yes, Tottenham need midfield reinforcements but Skipp is certainly very talented and has a big future here. We must keep him at all costs.
